The Iraqi Archaeological Expedition has been operating since 1973, as the first archaeological activity in the Emirate of Sharjah, where the Iraqi mission conducted surveys and excavations in several areas of the emirate, with the most prominent site being the Mleiha archaeological site.

The Palace site, as well as the third-century BC burial site, are among the most prominent areas that were excavated.
